What about Almaty, Kazakhstan?

Every time we tell someone we're moving to Kazakhstan in August, their reply is usually:
 "Where?"
 "That's where Borat is from."
or
"Sounds cool! I don't know anything about it!"

Here are some fun facts to get you up to speed....

Kazakhstan is the world's largest landlocked country, as well as the 9th largest country in the world; however, it only has a total population of 17 million. Until 1991, it was part of the former Soviet Union.

We'll be living in the former capital city of Almaty, also called a "garden city". Almaty city has 80 sq.m. of green plantations for each of its 1.4 million residents. It's located in the mountainous southern region of the country, with hiking and camping opportunities just minutes from the city! In Russian, Almaty means "grown with apple trees." Rumor has it that apples and tulips originated here!

Almaty was once a stop along the Silk Road, which means that there are many culinary and cultural influences throughout the city. With numerous Kazak, Chinese, Korean, Indian, European restaurants, along with everything else in between, we're sure to never go hungry!

Did we mention the weather yet? Warm summers and FREEZING winters... like 100 + days a year with snow on the ground kind of freezing. Skiing anyone? The 2011 Asian games were held in Almaty and the city is a bid for the 2022 Olympic games.

Last fact: The Domenico's are excited to explore their next home!
